Dementia, Space and Place

This module explores the role of design and the environment in supporting and caring for people living with dementia.

Entrance Requirements

This pathway is intended for applicants who do not already have a first degree. We require some work-based experience in dementia care.


English Language Requirements

  • IELTS Academic or UKVI 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each sub-skill.
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) 60 overall with a minimum of 59 in each sub-skill.
  • IBT TOEFL 78 overall with a minimum of 17 in listening, 18 in reading, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing.

Objectives

  • To examine and explore different theories and perspectives on dementia, ageing, place and space
  • To examine the evidence base on dementia and the environment and its implications for policy and practice
  • To critically reflect on your own practice in light of the knowledge and insights gained through this module
  • To gain direct experience in environmental auditing and other place-based skills to enhance dementia practice

  2. Architecture and design (part 1).
  3. Architecture and design (part 2).
  4. At home with dementia.
  5. Assistive technologies.
  6. Dementia enabling communities.

Delivery and Assessment

This online course is organised around participation in three discussion boards, supported by a module workbook and recommended reading each week. There is a final summative assignment that carries 100% of the grade for the module.

Employability

On completion of this module, students will be able to:


  1. Demonstrate an awareness of the evidence base concerning dementia and the environment and of the emerging themes and debates within this field.
  2. Acquire and apply knowledge of the different theories and paradigms that shape an understanding of dementia and the environment.
  3. Apply knowledge of specific environmental and technological approaches and interventions in the field of dementia care and be able to demonstrate their significance to their own practice.
