Introduction to the MD Undergraduate Program
The University of British Columbia's Faculty of Medicine offers a comprehensive MD Undergraduate Program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for a successful medical career. The program is structured around a four-year curriculum that integrates clinical and academic learning opportunities.
Program Structure
The MD Undergraduate Program is divided into four years, each with its unique set of courses and learning objectives.
Year 1
- Foundations of Medical Practice (FOMP) Courses: These courses introduce students to the practice of medicine through the integration of attitudes, skills, and knowledge. They are organized around clinical presentations and utilize a case-based approach to foster the development of evidence-based clinical reasoning and clinical skills.
- MEDD 411 - Foundations of Medical Practice I: A 17-week course delivered in Term 1 of Year 1, focusing on introductory-level understanding of core medical concepts and skills.
- MEDD 412 - Foundations of Medical Practice II: A 15-week course delivered in Term 2 of Year 1, continuing to enhance students' understanding of core medical concepts and skills.
- MEDD 419 - Foundations of Scholarship and Flexible Enhanced Learning I: A course that offers a unique opportunity for students to pursue a variety of learning experiences and scholarly activities within a flexible learning space.
Year 2
- Foundations of Medical Practice (FOMP) Courses: Continue from Year 1, with courses such as MEDD 421 and MEDD 422, which further enhance students' understanding of core medical concepts and skills.
- MEDD 421 - Foundations of Medical Practice III: A 14-week course delivered in Term 1 of Year 2, building on the competencies developed in Year 1.
- MEDD 422 - Foundations of Medical Practice IV and Transition into Clinical Education: A 14-week course delivered in Term 2 of Year 2, preparing students for clinical practice.
- MEDD 429 - Flexible Enhanced Learning II: A course designed to foster scholarship, innovation, creativity, critical thought, and community engagement.
Year 3
- MEDD 431 - Clerkship: A 48-week course providing students with core experiences across the breadth of medicine through both clinical and academic learning opportunities.
- The course is divided into four 12-week blocks covering various disciplines such as Women’s and Children’s Health, Surgical and Perioperative Care, Brain and Body, and Ambulatory Care.
- Students experience MEDD 431 through a rotational clerkship or an Integrated Community Clerkship (ICC).
Year 4
- MEDD 440 - Electives: A 24-credit course encompassing 6 months of Year 4, where students choose from available electives to gain experiences across the breadth of medicine.
- MEDD 448: Transition into Postgraduate Education and Medical Practice: A 9-week course delivered in Term 2 of Year 4, aiming to consolidate previous learning and support students in their transition into patient management and life-long learning.
- MEDD 449 - Flexible Enhanced Learning III: A course consisting solely of a 4-week full-time FLEX activity block, where students can build on scholarly activities initiated in previous FLEX courses.
Program Details
The MD Undergraduate Program at the University of British Columbia is designed to meet the Social Accountability Mandate, as articulated in the MDUP Mission Statement.
