Master's in Classics and Ancient Civilizations
The Master's in Classics and Ancient Civilizations (CAC) offers students the opportunity to become experts in the literature and societies of the Ancient Mediterranean.
Overview
- The program is a one-year, full-time Master's degree.
- It is taught in English.
- The program is offered jointly by VU Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) through the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA).
Tracks
- The program has two tracks: Classics and Ancient Civilizations.
- The Classics track provides excellent training in Greek and Latin language and literature from Homer to Late Antiquity, including linguistics, intertextuality, narratology, and reception.
- The Ancient Civilizations track offers an in-depth understanding of the social, cultural, and religious worlds of Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Near East.
Programme Content
- Students explore theoretical frameworks and methodologies currently used in Classics and Ancient Studies.
- In the Classics track, students gain thorough disciplinary knowledge of the Greek and Latin language and literature.
- In the Ancient Civilizations track, students specialize in themes related to Ancient Studies, such as religion, gender, and urban history.
- There are two joint courses for students of both tracks, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to the Ancient world.
- Students are considered partners in research, and teaching is strongly related to the research expertise of the staff.
Research

- Students have the opportunity to work closely with the research expertise of the staff, contributing to ongoing projects and developing their own research skills.
