Nurse-Midwifery Program Overview

The Nurse-Midwifery program provides primary care for women across the lifespan, from adolescence through menopause. Nurse-Midwives offer services such as reproductive care, gynecology, pregnancy and birth care, and postpartum support.

  • Women's Health

Differentiated Student Expected Outcomes

The Nurse-Midwifery graduate is prepared to:


  • Provide advanced, evidence-based midwifery care to women, infants, and families by integrating theory, clinical expertise, and patient preferences in diverse and evolving healthcare settings.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate population-focused healthcare strategies while demonstrating leadership, ethical decision-making, and advocacy to influence health policy at all levels.
  • Advance the midwifery profession through scholarly inquiry, professional adaptability, and active contribution to clinical innovation and organizational improvement.

Emphasis Length

The Nurse-Midwifery Emphasis is completed in 8 semesters.


Mode

The program is offered in a Hybrid format, which includes synchronous and asynchronous online learning with some on-campus activities required.


Clinical Experience

Students gain hands-on experience through 840 Direct Patient Care Hours.


Pass Rates

The combined national certification pass rate stands at 100%.

Certification Eligibility

Graduates are prepared to sit for national certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). Upon successful completion of the exam, candidates are eligible to become certified or licensed to practice.


Accreditation

The Nurse-Midwifery education program at the University of Utah, College of Nursing is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME).
