Overview

The Irish (Gaelic) – Beginner course is designed for absolute beginners who want to learn Irish for everyday use. This course prepares students for in-depth Irish language study and is delivered online via Zoom.

What You'll Learn

Students will gain the speaking skills and confidence to have conversations about everyday topics, such as:

Time Commitment

This is an online course that will require roughly 16 hours to complete, consisting of:


  • 8 x 2-hour sessions

Course Curriculum

The course curriculum includes the following topics:


Greeting and Introductions

  • Language functions:
    • Saying hello and goodbye
    • Asking someone’s name
    • Introducing yourself
    • Numbers 0 to 10
  • Language structures:
    • Alphabet
    • Irish pronunciation (vowels, consonants)
    • Explanation of the different dialects
    • Simple questions – Céard, cén fáth

Nationalities and Professions

  • Language functions:
    • Asking and stating nationalities
    • Asking and stating where one lives
    • Asking and stating professions
    • Numbers 11 to 20
  • Language structures:
    • The present tense of 'to be'
    • - proverbs
    • Preposition with countries (in Éirinn)
    • The negation (Ní Éireannach mé)

Friends and Family

  • Language functions:
    • Introducing friends and family
    • Asking and stating age
    • Asking and talking about your family
    • Counting people
  • Language structures:
    • The present tense of ‘to have’ – -
    • Possessives adjectives (mo, do, a, a, ár, bhur, a)
    • Questions

Eating Out

  • Language functions:
    • Ordering a drink or snack
    • Offering, accepting and refusing a drink
    • Asking and telling prices
    • Counting things
  • Language structures:
    • Feminine + masculine (basics)
    • Present tense verb (to go) –
    • Present tense of regular verbs
    • Place names

Location

  • Language functions:
    • Asking and telling where something is
    • Asking and talking about where one lives and works
    • Apologising and attracting attention
  • Language structures:
    • Present tense of verb (to do)
    • Adjectives (nice place, busy office etc.)

Hobbies

  • Language functions:
    • Explaining hobbies
    • Making simple enquiries
    • Asking about and identifying places and equipment
    • Asking and talking about weather
  • Language structures:
    • Past tense – +
    • Questions
    • Positive and negative answers

Revision

  • Language functions:
    • Ordering and making payment in a restaurant
    • Asking for and stating opening hours
    • Shopping
  • Language structures:
    • Revision: Questions, verbs, prepositions

There are no assessments for this short course.


Certification and Accreditation

You can request a Certificate of Attendance if you attend at least 75% of the course.
