Program Overview

The Maestría en Astrofísica (Master's in Astrophysics) is a postgraduate program offered by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The program aims to form experts in the handling and application of scientific techniques and methodologies, as well as in astronomical instrumentation, useful in professional practice and in the support and development of research projects.

Program Objectives

The objective of the Maestría en Astrofísica is to provide students with a solid preparation in astrophysics and in-depth knowledge in a specific area of interest, related to the chosen field of knowledge. The program seeks to develop students' skills in identifying, formulating, and solving research problems, as well as in presenting their knowledge and research results in a clear and concise manner.

Program Structure

The program consists of a series of courses and research activities designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of astrophysics and its applications. The program is divided into several areas of knowledge, including:

• Astrofísica observacional (Observational Astrophysics)
• Astrofísica teórica (Theoretical Astrophysics)
• Astrofísica de campos y partículas (Astrophysics of Fields and Particles)
• Instrumentación astronómica (Astronomical Instrumentation)

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Distinguir los aspectos fundamentales de fenómenos y problemas específicos en el área de astrofísica y su relación con conceptos físicos y astrofísicos básicos (Distinguish the fundamental aspects of specific phenomena and problems in the area of astrophysics and their relationship with basic physical and astrophysical concepts)
• Traducir estos aspectos al lenguaje matemático necesario para iniciar un estudio teórico, observacional o instrumental (Translate these aspects into the mathematical language necessary to initiate a theoretical, observational, or instrumental study)
• Desarrollar este análisis para obtener y expresar las conclusiones de su estudio (Develop this analysis to obtain and express the conclusions of their study)

Program Outcomes

Upon completing the program, graduates will have:

• Un sólido dominio de la astrofísica básica (A solid grasp of basic astrophysics)
• Conocimiento profundo y actualizado en el campo de conocimiento que haya elegido (In-depth and up-to-date knowledge in the chosen field of knowledge)
• Habilidad para identificar, plantear y resolver problemas de investigación (Ability to identify, formulate, and solve research problems)
• Destrezas para exponer los conocimientos adquiridos y los resultados de su trabajo de investigación, tanto en forma verbal como escrita (Skills to present acquired knowledge and research results, both verbally and in writing)
• La facultad de trabajar en forma independiente y en grupo (The ability to work independently and in a group)

Graduates of the program will be qualified to:

• Apoyar, proponer o desarrollar proyectos de investigación básica o aplicada con sustento en la física (Support, propose, or develop basic or applied research projects with a foundation in physics)
• Realizar labores de difusión científica (Carry out scientific dissemination tasks)
