Program Overview

The Faculty of Law at Heidelberg University offers a degree program in law, equipping students with the skills required to work systematically and conceptually to understand and apply legal concepts. The program covers the relevant historical, philosophical, and theoretical foundations of law.

Course Content

The Master’s degree program is intended to be studied full-time in Heidelberg. Students become familiar with the key elements of the German legal system, including international and European law. Students also have the opportunity to further develop their knowledge in selected areas of law.


Course Structure

The degree program consists of six modules:


  • I. Compulsory Module I: Civil Law
  • II. Compulsory Module II: Public Law
  • III. Compulsory Module III: Seminar
  • IV. Elective modules: lectures, seminars, colloquia
  • V. Magister thesis
  • VI. Oral Magister Examination

The foundations of German civil and public law are studied intensively in modules I and II. Module III ensures that a strong link is made between research and learning. Students select module IV from a wide range of elective courses on various aspects of law. Module V, the Magister thesis, gives students the opportunity to advance their academic work. It is complemented by module VI, the oral Magister examination, which will focus on the area of law considered in the Magister thesis, and any neighboring areas of law.
