Program Overview
The Accounting, Auditing and Control program is a 30-credit course offered by Umeå University. It is a second-cycle course, meaning it is designed for students who have already completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent. The program is taught in English and is offered on campus in Umeå.
Program Structure
The program consists of four modules:

Module 1: Advanced Financial Statement Analysis and Valuation
This module aims to provide students with relevant theories, methods, and models for valuing companies and their securities. The module deals with the analysis of financial statement information and the use of this information for business strategy analysis, performance evaluation, and investment decisions.
Expected Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, students should be able to:
- Value the equity, operations, and debt of companies using different valuation approaches/models and financial statement information.
- Analyze and reformulate financial statements to identify a firm's business strategy and value drivers.
- Analyze market prices, value drivers, and financial measures.
- Explain the relations between accounting standards, accounting methods, and value.
- Integrate environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) factors into equity valuation.
Focus of Instruction
Learning is supported by lectures, seminars, literature, cases, and projects. Students are introduced to academic conduct, including how to avoid plagiarism and referencing techniques.
Examination Modes
Examination is based on an individual written hall exam, multiple-choice tests, and an individual computer-based examination on plagiarism and referencing.
Module 2: Advanced Management Accounting
This module addresses modern issues in management control and performance measurement. The focus is on the enhancement of shareholder value through customer-driven value creation from a value-based management perspective.
Expected Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, students should be able to:
- Explain the meaning and significance of management accounting and control.
- Evaluate how company goals and factors in the environment influence the management accounting system.
- Apply management accounting processes.
- Analyze the specific challenges to the design of management accounting systems in not-for-profit organizations.
Focus of Instruction
The developments of the management accounting subject, techniques, and concepts are presented during lectures. Students are expected to take an active part in discussions, literature and article seminars, and reporting about case studies.
Module Examination Modes
Examination is based upon a written individual hall exam and written group assignments with oral presentation.
Module 3: Advanced Financial and Sustainability Reporting
This module develops students' abilities to prepare and analyze financial and sustainability reports. It focuses on the reporting in large companies and develops students' abilities to handle more complicated accounting issues.
Expected Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, students should be able to:
- Apply IFRS accounting standards.
- Assess the consequences of different options in relation to accounting-method choices and approaches used for making estimates in accounting.
- Apply the European Union's and the International Sustainability Standards Board's regulations when preparing sustainability reports.
- Make materiality assessments in financial reporting and sustainability reporting.

Learning is supported by lectures, practically oriented exercises, teacher-led case-discussions, and tutoring sessions.
Module Examination Modes
The examination is based on a written individual hall exam and cases. The case-assignments are solved in groups, and the assessment is based on the students' submissions and activity in teacher-led case-discussions.
Module 4: Advanced Auditing
This module aims to give students a solid theoretical and practical foundation in auditing. It covers central topics of auditing, such as risk and materiality assessment, the planning of auditing, the auditing process, and auditors' reporting.
Expected Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, students should be able to:
- Discuss and compare the factors that create a demand for auditing and affect the value of auditing.
- Analyze determinants of audit quality, ethics, and independence from different perspectives.
- Identify and analyze the steps in the audit process.
- Evaluate what mix of audit procedures to be performed and what tests are suitable for auditing different financial statement items.
Focus of Instruction
Learning is supported by lectures, workshops, and seminars, in which students are expected to take an active part. Cases related to the topics will also be used.

Examination is based upon a written individual hall exam and group assignments.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the program, students must have:
- 90 credits out of which 75 credits in Business Administration.
- Approved 52.5 credits, including 7.5 credits in bachelor courses.
- At least 7.5 credits in finance courses and at least 7.5 credits in accounting.
- Broad knowledge of different specializations within the subject of Business Administration.
- Statistics 7.5 credits or equivalent.
- Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.
Application and Tuition Fees
As a citizen of a country outside the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland, students are required to pay application and tuition fees for studies at Umeå University.

Selection
Selection is based on academic credits.
Program Duration
The program starts on September 1, 2025, and ends on January 18, 2026. It is a full-time program, and the study pace is 100%. The teaching hours are daytime, and the study location is Umeå. The language of instruction is English.
