Bachelor of Engineering with Honours

The Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons)) degree at the University of Waikato is designed to provide students with a solid foundation for their professional engineering career. The program focuses on how complex engineering problems that matter to society can be solved using engineering design principles and methods.

Why Study the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours?

The BE(Hons) degree provides students with the opportunity to showcase their research and design work at the Waikato Engineering Design Show, an expo-style event open to industry and the public. Students also complete 800 hours of work experience, usually paid, with a company or organisation that suits their interests, making valuable industry contacts which can lead to part or full-time work.

Entry Requirements

There are five ways to gain admission to the University of Waikato:


  1. NCEA University Entrance
  2. Admission at entrance level
  3. Discretionary entrance
  4. University Entrance prior to 2015
  5. Special admission

Entry into the BE(Hons) degree is guaranteed to applicants who gain University Entrance, or equivalent, and satisfy the individual entry requirements of the relevant specified programme.


Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering

  • Calculus: a minimum of 16 credits in NCEA at Level 3 in Calculus
  • Physics: a minimum of 14 credits in NCEA at Level 3 in Physics

Chemical and Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Materials and Process Engineering

  • Calculus: a minimum of 16 credits in NCEA at Level 3 in Calculus
  • Chemistry or Physics: a minimum of 14 credits in NCEA at Level 3 in Chemistry or Physics

Software Engineering

  • Calculus: a minimum of 16 credits in NCEA at Level 3 in Mathematics with Calculus

Fees and Scholarships

  • Estimated fees: $9,437 per year (domestic tuition fees)
  • Scholarships: available through the University's Scholarship finder

Work Placements

The BE(Hons) degree includes 800 hours of work experience, usually paid, with a company or organisation that suits the student's interests. This provides students with valuable industry contacts and can lead to part or full-time work.

Students who have completed the BE(Hons) degree may go on to complete a Master of Engineering (ME) or Master of Engineering Practice (MEngPrac). Excellent grades at undergraduate level may enable students to go straight to a PhD.
