Introduction to the Graduate Diploma in Teaching

The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (GradDipTchg) is a teaching qualification that can be completed in as little as one year. This program is designed to transform learning, foster imagination, and inspire the next generation to lead change. The GradDipTchg is a teaching qualification that will lead to becoming a registered teacher in New Zealand.

  • Points and Duration: 150 points, 1 year
  • Locations: Hamilton, Tauranga, Online
  • Area of Study: School of Education
  • Start Dates: Trimester H (January) and Trimester B (July)

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the GradDipTchg program, candidates must:


  • Hold a Bachelor's degree at Level 7 on the NZ Qualifications Framework or a recognized equivalent
  • Meet the admission requirement for The University of Waikato
  • Undergo an interview and selection process
  • Demonstrate competency in mathematics by completing the Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool (LNAAT) test (for Primary program applicants)

Fees and Scholarships

  • Estimated Fees: $9,517 per year (domestic tuition fees)
  • Scholarships: Available through the University's Scholarship finder

Alternative Entry Pathway

The University of Waikato provides an alternative entry pathway for career changers, particularly those in the trades who are looking to become technology education teachers. This pathway consists of a Diploma in Education and then a GradDipTchg (Secondary).


Career Changers: Technology Education (Secondary)

The alternative entry pathway for career changers in technology education (Secondary) requires:


  • A relevant Trades qualification at Level 5, 6, or 7 on the NZQF
  • A minimum of five years of relevant work experience in the last eight years
  • Completion of one undergraduate paper before full enrollment into the GradDipTchg
