Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences (Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging)

Introduction

The Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Alberta offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences (Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging) program. This program allows students to conduct research in medical imaging, radiological and health physics, or radiation biology and biophysics.


Why Study This Program?

Facilities exist within the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging for students who wish to obtain either a Master of Science or a PhD degree. The Department participates with other departments of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in offering these programs in medical sciences.


Entrance Requirements

Entrance requirements are defined in the Medical Sciences section of the University calendar. Inquiries regarding graduate work in the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging should be directed to the Director of Graduate Studies or the Graduate Program Administrator.

Program Requirements

Program Core Competencies

The following are the program-specific requirements to satisfy the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's Program Core Competencies:


  • Professional Development and Ethics: Students must complete the GPS Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement and the GPS Professional Development Requirement.
  • Communication: Students are required to participate in Radiology seminars on medical imaging, Supervisors' journal clubs, group meeting presentations, and Radiology Research Day (RRD) on an annual basis.
  • Critical Reading/Thinking: Students must complete 3 units of graduate-level coursework to develop competency in Critical Reading/Thinking.
  • Background Knowledge: Students must complete 3 units of graduate-level coursework to develop competency in Background Knowledge.

PhD Thesis Proposal

Students must prepare and defend a thesis proposal according to the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's PhD Thesis Proposal and Thesis Proposal Meeting guidelines.


Candidacy Exam

Students must pass the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's Doctoral Candidacy Examination.


Thesis

Students are required to prepare and defend a thesis on a topic approved by their supervisor and supervisory committee. Registration in 900-level THES is required.


Length of Program

The minimum length of time in the program is defined by the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's Minimum Length of Time in Program and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research's Time Limit for Completion of Graduate Programs.

Tuition and Fees

Financial assistance in the form of Graduate Research Assistant Fellowships from supervisors' operating funds is normally available to students in good standing. Students may also be eligible for awards from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Exceptionally qualified applicants may be nominated for University of Alberta entrance scholarships. Other funding is provided by scholarships awarded to students by various agencies, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and the Provincial Government of Alberta. Students will be expected to apply for such external funding.


Scholarships and Financial Support

The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies administers over $29 million each year in scholarships, awards, and financial support for graduate students, as well as financial and loan advising. Additional scholarships are also available for specific faculties and programs.
