Master of Science (Surgery)
The Department of Surgery offers a Master of Science (Surgery) program, providing research facilities in various institutes, including the Ray Rajotte Surgical-Medical Research Institute (SMRI), the Alberta Diabetes Institute, and the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Research Innovation (LKS).
Why Study This Program?
The program offers core facilities, such as surgical suites, simulation facilities, and laboratories, with technical staff to assist graduate students in their research projects. Facilities are available for various research projects, including islet transplantation, immunology of diabetes, perinatal physiology, burns/wound healing, and more.

Program Requirements
- The program is thesis-based, with a Master's degree level.

Program Core Competencies
The following are the program-specific requirements to satisfy the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's Program Core Competencies:
1. Professional Development and Ethics
- Students must complete the GPS Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement and the GPS Professional Development Requirement.
- Students in the Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) must take MED 650 - Fundamentals for Clinical Investigators.
2. Communication
- SURG 530 - Directed Reading in Biology and Medicine
- SURG 600 - Research Seminar, or equivalent research seminars with approval.
3. Critical Reading/Thinking
- Supervisors may require additional courses to enhance competency in critical reading/thinking.
4. Background Knowledge
- Students must take one 3-unit graduate-level course in statistics or a relevant field.
- The supervisor may require additional courses to enhance knowledge competencies.
Thesis
- Registration in 900-level THES is required.
- Students must prepare and defend a thesis on a topic approved by their supervisor and supervisory committee.
