Introduction

The University of Pécs offers a Master of Arts in Balkan Studies, providing students with practical and professional knowledge, as well as theoretical foundations, to find employment in the public and private sectors. The program focuses on the current problems and conditions of the Balkan region, with a multi- and interdisciplinary approach.

Description of the Program

The training in the Balkan Studies Master's degree program focuses on the current problems and conditions of the region, above all from Hungarian and Central European point of view, with a multi- and interdisciplinary, as well as a critical approach. It is recommended primarily to those who want to specialize their existing qualifications, received in social sciences or humanities, with general and practical knowledge of the region, as well as with language skills.

Application Procedure

The application procedure includes a Skype/MS Teams interview, which takes around 10-15 minutes. During this interview, questions about motivation and interests are asked. The main goal of this discussion is to learn more about language knowledge, personal skills, and scientific interest.

Application Requirements

• Certified and translated (if originals are not in English) copy of undergraduate program transcripts showing satisfactory completion of BA (undergraduate) program
• BA diploma certificate (180 credits)
• CV in English
• Motivation letter (introduction plus field of interest, etc.) in 3000 to 3500 characters
• Copy of valid passport or national ID
• Medical certificate, including:
  • Vaccination card (showing that you are immunized against HEP B)
  • HEP A/B/C test
  • HIV test
  • Chest X-ray: Please attach the chests X-ray result (not the film!) in English/Hungarian! (not older than 3 months)
• Transfer receipt of the EUR 140 application fee
• Acceptable online language exams
• Entrance Exam (personally or via MS Teams)

3rd semester:

• The Ottoman conquest and its consequences
• Climate change, water policy - responses in the Balkans
• Country studies

4th semester:

• Conflict zones and peace-building in the Balkans
• Field trip (current situation of the region, international environment)
• Balkan languages (Croatian, Serbian)
