Introduction to the Social Work MSc (PGDip)
The Social Work MSc (PGDip) is an intensive program designed for graduates from any discipline who wish to train and qualify as social workers. This program combines academic and professional modules, focusing on both the social science knowledge base of social work and developing practice-relevant knowledge, skills, and values through 200 days of practical learning.
Entry Criteria
To be eligible for the program, applicants must have:
- An honors degree in any subject, normally with a minimum of upper second class (2:1) honors
- A satisfactory academic reference and/or transcript, indicating ability to study at level 7
- Understanding of, and preparedness for, social care and social work practice
- Experience of providing social or caring services from paid or voluntary work
- GCSE in English language with grade C or grade 4 or above
- IELTS 7.0 overall, no element below 6.5
Course Content
The program consists of university-based teaching and 200 days of practice learning. The course structure includes:
- Year 1: Introduction to core skills, theories, and approaches for social work practice and social work research
- Year 2: Development of knowledge and skills for more specialist, complex, and challenging practice
- Modules:
- Lifespan Development Social and Psychological Contexts
- Legal and Policy Contexts of Decision-Making in Social Work
- Critical Social Work in Practice and Research
- Research in Social Work: The Dissertation
- Contemporary Social Work
- Practice Learning 1 and 2
Placements
Practice learning placements are a core part of the training, with 200 days allocated for this. The placements include:
- 30 days of skills for practice days delivered within the university
- A 70-day placement in a non-statutory setting
- A 100-day placement in a statutory setting
Accreditation and Professional Links
The program is approved by Social Work England (SWE), the regulatory body for the social work profession and qualifying training programs in England. The university works with a consortium of partners, including the University of Sussex, Brighton & Hove City Council, and East Sussex County Council, to deliver a positive training experience.
Careers and Employability
The program leads to registration with Social Work England, enabling graduates to apply for social work jobs and practice as registered social workers. Graduates can specialize in various areas, including children in need and child protection, adults in need of protection, youth offending, mental health, substance misuse, and specialist disability and enablement support.

The tuition fees for the program are:
- MSc: Ł8,244 (UK), Ł17,748 (International)
- PGDip: Ł5,496 (UK), Ł11,832 (International) Additional costs include clothing, travel, and DBS checks.
Location and Student Life
The program is based at the Moulsecoomb campus, which offers a range of facilities, including the Students' Union events venue, sports and fitness facilities, and the library and student center. The campus is located two miles north of Brighton seafront, with easy access to buses and trains.
