Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Spatial Planning
The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Spatial Planning is a comprehensive program designed to respond to Malta's current and future spatial and developmental needs. The course aims to create a new breed of spatial planners with a broad spectrum of knowledge covering the different pillars of spatial planning as defined by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) in the UK.
Program Overview
The program provides students with a holistic understanding of the complexities surrounding spatial planning, enabling them to familiarize themselves with the most important issues, authors, and debates pertinent to the individual fields of study. By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills, formulate future spatial planning policy-making, and weigh different planning considerations in the assessment of complex development planning applications.
Program Structure
The program is divided into three years, with each year comprising two semesters. The course includes a range of compulsory units, including:
- Year 1: Foundations and Applications of Economics, Public Policy for Planners, Understanding Space as a Social Product, Data Treatment and Probability, Introduction to Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods for Spatial Planning, Underlying Principles of Urban Design, Introduction to Effective Planning Tools and Techniques, and From Town Planning to Spatial Planning.
- Year 2: Public Management and Sustainability, Locating the Global Society, Sociology of Space and Place, Environmental Assessment for Spatial Planning, Effective Planning Tools and Techniques, Project Development, and Road Infrastructure.
- Year 3: Assessing Air Pollution in an Urban Environment, Understanding Cost-Benefit Analysis for Spatial Planning, Environment and Resources, Ethics and Spatial Planning, Urban Design Theory and Practice, Research Methods and Tools for Spatial Planners, Strategic Management, and Planning for Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet the general entry requirements, which include a pass in an English language proficiency test approved by the University. Applicants with a Secondary Education Certificate pass at Grade 3 or higher in English Language or a comparable qualification are exempt from sitting for the proficiency test.
Fees
The fee per academic year for non-EU applicants is Eur 10,800.
Career Opportunities
Graduates may choose to become employed by public agencies, private sector spatial planning, architectural, or environmental management firms. They may also further their studies by enrolling in a postgraduate course offered by the University of Malta or a foreign institution abroad.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

- Weigh different planning considerations in the assessment of complex development planning applications within wider spatial planning considerations.
- Explain and analyze different theoretical constructs learned throughout the course through the application of theory to practice.
- Discuss spatial planning matters through the use of practical, day-to-day examples of planning decisions and completed projects on the ground.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the complex nature of spatial planning through the undertaking of a research project in the form of a long essay.
