Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Honours) (Information Systems)

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Honours) (Information Systems) degree programme is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of information systems and their application in business environments. This programme is a computing degree that focuses on the development of software, including programming in various languages, databases, web and mobile application development, and other related areas.


Programme Overview

The programme is a three-year full-time course, with the option to apply for part-time study. The degree is made up of 180 ECTS credits, with a combination of compulsory and elective units. Students can choose from four elective streams: Information Systems, Computing for Business, Computing for Finance, and Computing for Marketing.


Elective Streams

  • Information Systems: This stream provides in-depth knowledge of how to design, implement, and manage IT solutions that support organisational needs and strategy.
  • Computing for Business: This stream allows students to orientate their accrued scientific knowledge towards business, providing an insight into fundamental business procedures and techniques.
  • Computing for Finance: This stream provides more emphasis on business within the financial sector, including banking, insurance, financial audit, investment operations, and financial brokerage.
  • Computing for Marketing: This stream provides students with trends and practices in marketing, including digital marketing and using social media for marketing.

Year 1

In the first year, students are required to register for 60 ECTS credits, including compulsory and elective units. The compulsory units cover topics such as information systems, programming in Python, computer platforms, and introduction to structured development.


Year 2

In the second year, students are required to register for a total of at least 60 ECTS credits, according to their chosen stream. The compulsory units cover topics such as principles and paradigms of programming languages, enterprise IT planning, software development methods and techniques, and user interface design.


Year 3

In the third year, students are required to register for a total of 60 ECTS credits, according to their chosen stream. The compulsory units cover topics such as software engineering, project management, data analytics, and leadership and organisational innovation.


Admission Requirements

Admission to this course is open to applicants who possess:


  • Advanced Level passes at Grade C or better in two of the following subjects: Accounting, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Economics, English, Information Technology, Marketing, Philosophy, Physics, Pure Mathematics.
  • An Intermediate Level pass at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics and Computing or Information Technology.
  • The Certificate in ICT Foundation Studies from the University of Malta.
  • Other qualifications recognised by Senate for the purpose of the Admissions Regulations.

Tuition Fees

The fee per academic year for non-EU nationals is Eur 10,800.


Career Opportunities

Graduates from this degree programme can find employment in local or international business organisations that adopt new or maintain existing supporting IT infrastructures in business. The level of employment will vary from developer to team and project management, and after due experience, even to more strategic positions. Graduates can also participate in or instigate start-up software development companies, or pursue specialisation at Masters level.
