Introduction to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sport and Physical Activity

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sport and Physical Activity is a 3-year full-time program designed to equip students with the necessary skills to address the challenges of delivering quality sport and physical activities. This degree course will provide students with a sound understanding of the value of sport and its role in society, as well as the skills to determine ways of improving services in this sector.


Program Overview

The program will surpass disciplinary limits to adopt a holistic approach to sport as a tool for development. Various components will be emphasized throughout the course, with an emphasis on the development of different personnel involved in sporting and physical activities. A particular emphasis on coaching and sport development responsibilities within the physical activity, sport, and leisure sector will be made.


Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills program complements students' main course of study, introducing them to writing and presenting within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines. This program develops students' competences for future careers.


Admission Requirements

  • General Entry Requirements: Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications.
  • Notes and any other requirements:
    • Applicants admitted under paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations must be in possession of those qualifications and/or experience that would satisfy the Board that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit.
    • Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an English Proficiency Test.
    • Applicants in possession of the Diploma in Sport and Leisure Studies may also be admitted to the Course.
  • All applicants shall:
    • Submit a medical fitness certificate.
    • Submit a Police Good Conduct Certificate.
    • Submit documented evidence pertaining to any relevant experience.

The program is divided into three years, with each year comprising compulsory units. The details of the units for each year are as follows:


Year 1

    • PHE1106: Fundamentals of Coaching
    • PHE1124: Psychological Foundations of Sport, Physical Activity and Skill Acquisition
    • PHE1126: Introduction to Research, Writing and Study Skills
    • PHE1146: Outdoor Activities, Team Building and Innovative Games
    • PHE1147: Teaching, Coaching and Officiating Athletics
    • PHE1118: Foundations of Biomechanics, Anatomy and Motor Control
    • PHE1127: Introductory Nutrition
    • PHE1128: Introduction to Sociology of Sport and Contemporary Issues
  • Requirement for regular progression to Year 2: 58 ECTS credits and 2 ECTS credits optional study-units.

  • Requirement for successful completion of Year 3: 58 ECTS credits and 2 ECTS optional study-units.

Tuition Fees

  • Fee per academic year for Non-EU applicants: Eur 8,500

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the B.Sc. (Hons) in Sport and Physical Activity program will be equipped with a sound grounding and an in-depth knowledge and skills of the different fields of sport and physical activity. Potential employers include the state sector, the private sector industry investing in sport and leisure, educational institutions, and the voluntary sector including sport organizations. Graduates will have the option of pursuing other courses at a higher level either offered by the University of Malta or overseas.
