Introduction to the Preparatory Course for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing

The Preparatory Course for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing is designed for individuals who do not possess the required entry qualifications to pursue a degree program in nursing. The primary objective of this course is to equip students with the essential skills necessary to secure admission to and successfully engage in the undergraduate degree in nurse education.


Program Details

  • Duration and Credits: The course spans 1 year, comprising 60 ECTS credits.
  • Mode of Study: The program is offered on a full-time basis.
  • MQF Level: Not Applicable (NA)

Admission Requirements

General Entry Requirements

Applicants must refer to the list of country-specific qualifications for general entry requirements.


Special Course Requirements

Applicants are required to be in possession of one of the following:


  • Passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Level 3 or Grade 5 or better in six subjects, including Maltese, English Language, and Mathematics.
  • A Diploma awarded by an institution other than the University of Malta, pegged at MQF/EQF Level 4, comprising not less than 120 ECTS/ECVET credits.

Additional Requirements

  • Applicants must be aged not less than 18 years within three months following the date on which the Preparatory Course commences.
  • Applicants not in possession of the Special Course Requirements and considered under the Adult Learners clause shall be required to sit for and pass an interview.
  • During the first semester of the Preparatory Course, accepted applicants are also required to undergo an occupational health assessment.

Program Structure

The program includes both compulsory and elective units. Students are required to choose 12 ECTS from the elective study-units, in addition to the compulsory study-units (48 ECTS), to a total of 60 ECTS.

Progression

If students successfully complete all credits included in the preparatory program and obtain a final average mark of at least 55%, they will be able to progress to the B.Sc. (Hons) in Nursing offered by the Department of Nursing within the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malta.


Program Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be:


  • Equipped with academic skills consistent with degree-level education.
  • Introduced to the nature and core elements of the nursing profession and the practice of being a qualified nurse.
  • Enabled to equip themselves with the required basic knowledge in the biomedical sciences.
  • Able to engage in degree-level education in a satisfactory manner.
  • Developed an understanding of the role and contribution of the nurse in modern health and social care systems.
  • Better understand the pathophysiology of disease and its management, as taught in the Degree program in Nursing.
