Master MA Program

The Master's program in "Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft" (Public Relations and Communication Science) lasts for four semesters (minimum study period) and comprises 30 semester hours per week (SWS). The total workload is equivalent to 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) points.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Master's program, students must have completed a Bachelor's degree in "Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft" or a comparable study program.

Study Plan

The Master's program includes various lectures (VO), lectures with exercises (VU), and seminars (SE). The program is divided into several modules:

  • VERTHE: Theoretical deepening, where students attend three lectures without prerequisite chains.
  • VERME: Methodological deepening, where students attend a lecture that serves as a prerequisite for two exercises (VUs). This lecture, called "Repititorium," repeats and refreshes topics from the Bachelor's program and takes place in the form of an intensive week with an examination at the end.
  • VERBE: Professional deepening, where students gain insights into profession-related knowledge and skills. This module consists of four lectures, and students can choose from various topics, including:
    • Medien- und Kommunikationsmanagement (Media and Communication Management)
    • Medien- und Kommunikationsrecht (Media and Communication Law)
    • Kommunikationswissenschaftliche Forschung (Communication Science Research)
    • Berufspraxisfeld (Professional Practice Field)
  • VERIN: Individual deepening, where students can attend additional lectures from VERBE or other modules to promote interdisciplinary knowledge.

Research Seminar

The research seminar (FOSE) prepares students for current research by working on two projects from freely chosen topic areas. The prerequisites for attending the research seminar are VERTHE and VERME, which should be completed in the first semester.

Master Module

The Master's module can be attended after completing the research seminar.

Additional Requirements for Non-Related Prior Studies

Students who have not studied Public Relations or a related field prior to the Master's program may need to complete additional requirements. These requirements do not replace lectures in the Master's curriculum but must be completed in addition to the regular study program.

Program Structure

The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in Public Relations and Communication Science, including theoretical foundations, methodological skills, and professional knowledge. The program's structure allows students to specialize in various areas, including media and communication management, media and communication law, communication science research, and professional practice fields.
