The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Building Engineering and Management is a four-year full-time programme offered by the Faculty of Construction and Environment at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Programme Overview
The programme provides an excellent opportunity for students who would like to pursue an education in building engineering and construction management. The growing building construction industry in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions requires graduates who possess highly specialised skills in technology, management, and communication.
Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes
The programme aims to provide students with a comprehensive education in building engineering and management, enabling them to become professional building engineers and construction managers. The programme learning outcomes include:
- Highly specialised skills in technology, management, and communication
- Ability to plan, coordinate, supervise, and control complex building projects
- In-depth understanding of various artificial intelligence and data analytics approaches
Programme Structure
The programme requires students to take 120 credits and 2 training credits during the four-year period. The subjects include:
- Building Engineering and Technology
- Management
- Construction Economics
- Project Works
- A Capstone Project
- Languages
Practical Training and Internship
Practical training/internship (Work-Integrated Education, WIE) is a compulsory element of the curriculum. Students usually complete an internship during the summer period.
Mentorship Scheme
The Department maintains a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with senior professionals in the construction and real estate industry to gain insights into professional practice.
Student Exchange Programme
The Department also operates a student exchange programme, providing opportunities to study abroad for one academic semester at universities in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan, Mainland China, and elsewhere.
Recognition and Prospects
The programme has been granted professional accreditation by the following institutions:
- The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE)
- The Chartered Institute of Building in the UK (CIOB)
- Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM)
Graduates of the programme can become building engineers and/or construction managers, with ample opportunities for challenging and rewarding careers in Hong Kong’s building and infrastructure development sector.
Curriculum
The programme covers the following subject components:
- Core/Major Subjects: Construction Technology, Structural Mechanics, Building Services, Temporary Works Design, Project Management & Procurement, Maintenance Technology & Management, Measurement, Documentation & Estimating, and Building Information Modelling (BIM) Applications and Development
- General University Requirement Subjects: Students are required to take 27 credits of General University Requirement (GUR) subjects
- Free Electives: Students are required to take 6 credits of Free Electives
- Capstone Project: Students are required to complete a 6-credit Capstone Project
- Work-Integrated Education: The Department’s WIE element has a minimum duration of 4 weeks in full-time placement (equivalent to 22 full days) or 176 hours in part-time placement
Secondary Major Details
Students in the BSc (Hons) BEM programme have the option to pursue a Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA). The Secondary Major programme is designed to train students to become digitalisation specialists and leading innovators in the field of construction industry by adopting advanced digital technologies and data-driven approaches.

Interview Arrangement
The interview arrangement for Local JUPAS, Local Non-JUPAS Year 1, and Non-Local International / Other Qualification applicants is as follows:
- Local JUPAS: Group interview, about 20 minutes, English, after the announcement of HKDSE results
- Local Non-JUPAS Year 1: Individual / Group Interview, about 15 - 30 minutes, English, between December 2025 and July 2026
- Non-Local International / Other Qualification: Individual / Group Interview, about 15 - 30 minutes, English, between December 2025 and July 2026
