Master's in Statistics and Data Science

The Master's degree program in Statistics and Data Science introduces students to important models and methods from Probability Theory, Statistics, Financial Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and relevant aspects of Computer Science. The program focuses on the application of statistical and data science methods in various fields, considering them a key technology for scientific research. Students are guided to work independently on a scientific project and become acquainted with recent research in these fields.


Program Details

  • The program consists of 90 ECTS credits.
  • It is designed to be completed in 3 semesters.
  • The language of instruction is English.
  • The program starts in either the fall or spring semester.

Scheme of Program

  • The Master's in Statistics and Data Science corresponds to 90 ECTS points, consisting of a Master module (60 ECTS) and a Master thesis (30 ECTS).
  • Courses are held in English.
  • The Master module includes lectures in Statistics, Probability Theory, Finance and Insurance, Mathematics, and Computer Science, along with at least one seminar.
  • At least 20 ECTS must be attained in Statistics, and at least 10 ECTS in two of the other areas.

Master Thesis

  • Supervision of MSc theses is provided by full-time lecturers of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
  • External supervision requires approval by the Director of Studies in Statistics, who may appoint a co-supervisor from the department.

Requirements

Individual Academic Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree from a recognized Swiss university in Mathematics or Computer Science, with a sufficient share from the field of Stochastics.
  • A Bachelor's degree from a recognized Swiss university in a different branch of studies with at least 60 ECTS credits in Mathematics or Computer Science, with a sufficient share from the field of Stochastics, provided that the master's degree can be successfully completed with an additional maximum 60 ECTS credits.
  • A Bachelor's degree from a recognized international university with equivalent qualifications, with a sufficient share from the field of Stochastics, provided that the master's degree can be successfully completed with an additional maximum 60 ECTS credits.

Application and Admission

  • Admission is subject to a standardized interview with the director of studies.
  • The degree used for assessment purposes may not be more than ten years old.

Graduation

  • As soon as the requirements set by the study regulations are fulfilled, students can apply for a formal completion of their studies through the Dean's office.

  • There is a large demand for skilled statisticians and data scientists, with excellent career prospects in insurance companies, banks, public administration, transport companies, the medical sector, and the private sector.
  • After completing their studies, students have various options for further qualifications, such as the postgraduate program in actuarial science offered by the Swiss Association of Actuaries (SAV).
