Program Overview

The University of Geneva offers a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Psychotherapeutic Psychoanalysis: Psychoanalytic Therapies for Children and Adolescents. This program is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to adapt psychotherapeutic techniques to the communication possibilities of children and adolescents.


Objectives

The program aims to enable participants to:


  • Adapt psychoanalytic treatments to the stages of maturation of children and adolescents, as well as to different disorders presented
  • Deepen the construction of therapeutic devices with the child or adolescent, the family, and the network (setting up the framework, transferential situation, mediations, etc.)

Public

The program is intended for:


  • Psychologists holding a university master's degree in psychology issued by a Swiss university or a Swiss university of applied sciences in psychology (or an equivalent title)
  • Doctors holding a specialist title in child and adolescent psychiatry or adult psychiatry, or about to obtain it (or an equivalent title)

Program Structure

The program consists of:


A) Theoretical and Clinical Teaching

(80 hours of face-to-face teaching + approximately 160 hours of personal work)


  • Theoretical teachings that aim to work on, from a clinical situation brought by the teacher, the relevant theoretical concepts related to the theme
  • Seminars of reading, where the theme of the day will be taken up from a text by a post-Freudian author
  • Clinical workshops that will consist of a group elaboration of a question related to the theme of the day, from a clinical moment brought by a participant
  • Psychodramas of identification with the patient, where it will be a question of elaborating the personal implication of the psychotherapist in training in the therapeutic work using psychodramatic techniques

B) Group Supervisions

(24 hours of face-to-face teaching + approximately 24 hours of personal work)


  • Psychotherapy supervisions will take place in the evening (in principle on Thursdays), in groups of 6 to 7 participants at most

C) Theoretical-Clinical Work

(4 hours of face-to-face teaching + approximately 24 hours of personal work)


  • Participants must write and present a short thesis on an ongoing psychotherapy
  • In the elaboration of this project, individual support is ensured for each of the participants by one of the members of the Scientific Committee

Admission Criteria

  • Have already followed a postgraduate basic training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy
  • Be able to attest to previous clinical practice in a clinical activity comparable to that of a psychotherapist psychiatrist, respectively for children and adolescents, or a psychotherapist psychologist
  • Be engaged in a clinical activity of at least 40%, which allows them to conduct at least 2 supervised psychotherapies during the duration of the CAS

The CAS diploma is awarded jointly by the University of Geneva and the University of Lausanne.


Accreditation

The CAS can be recognized as continuing education according to the requirements of the FMH (Foederatio Medicorum Helveticorum).
