Introduction to LENScience
LENScience is a program that offers various student programs, including Face-to-Face, LENScience Connect, and Meet a Scientist. The program also provides professional learning and development opportunities, teaching and learning resources, and partnership programs.
Student Programmes
The student programs offered by LENScience include:
- Face-to-Face
- LENScience Connect
- Meet a Scientist
LENScience Connect
LENScience Connect is a program that provides students with the opportunity to explore various topics in science. One of the topics explored in the program is "Insight into Blindness."
Insight into Blindness
The "Insight into Blindness" program explores the topic of blindness and vision impairment. The program is based on the story of a large New Zealand whanau who are descendants of a Spanish whaler, Josť Manuel. The family has a high incidence of blindness, with over 40 members either blind or having extremely poor vision.
Resources
The program provides various resources, including:
- Links and Resources
- Pre-seminar Questions
- Challenge Questions
- Seminar paper for "Insight into blindness: exploring inheritance patterns"
- Pre-seminar paper for "Insight into blindness: exploring inheritance patterns"
- Challenge questions for "Insight into blindness: exploring inheritance patterns"
Research
The program involves research into the molecular genetics of inherited disorders of the retina. Dr. Marion Maw, a geneticist from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Otago, is part of the team of scientists working with the whanau to discover why so many of them suffer from blindness and vision impairment.
Partnership Programmes
LENScience also offers partnership programs, including the Pacific Science for Health Literacy Partnership Project. The program aims to promote health literacy and provide learning resources for students.
