Cancer Biology and Therapeutics Program

The Cancer Biology and Therapeutics program is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the molecular and genetic basis of cancers, as well as therapeutic strategies for treating these diseases.


Program Structure

To complete this program, students must take the following courses:


  • 90 points of compulsory core courses in Year 1, including:
    • BIOSCI 101 Life! Origins and Mechanisms
    • BIOSCI 106 Molecules of Life
    • BIOSCI 107 Biology for Biomedical Science: Cellular Processes
    • CHEM 110 Chemistry of the Living World
    • MEDSCI 142 Biology for Biomedical Science: Organ Systems
    • PHYSICS 160 Physics for the Life Sciences
  • 15 points of elective courses in Year 1, which may include:
    • POPLHLTH 111 Population Health (required for entry to Medicine, Bachelor of Pharmacy, and Bachelor of Medical Imaging)
    • STATS 101 Introduction to Statistics
    • STATS 108 Statistics for Commerce
    • Alternative elective courses
  • 15 points of General Education courses approved for this program
  • In Year 2 onwards, students must complete:
    • 75 points from a range of courses, including:
      • BIOSCI 201 Cellular and Molecular Biology
      • BIOSCI 202 Genetics
      • BIOSCI 220 Quantitative Biology
      • MEDSCI 203 Mechanisms of Disease
      • MEDSCI 204 Pharmacology and Toxicology
    • 15 points from courses such as:
      • BIOSCI 203 Biochemistry
      • MEDSCI 205 The Physiology of Human Organ Systems
    • 45 points from courses including:
      • BIOSCI 356 Developmental Biology and Cancer
      • MEDSCI 302 Cancer Biology
      • MEDSCI 319 Molecular Pharmacology
    • 15 points from a range of elective courses, such as:
      • BIOSCI 347 Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology
      • BIOSCI 348 Food and Industrial Microbiology
      • BIOSCI 349 Biomedical Microbiology
      • BIOSCI 350 Protein Structure and Function
      • MEDSCI 300 Analytical Anatomy and Visualisation
      • MEDSCI 301 Molecular Basis of Disease
      • MEDSCI 309 Biophysics of Nerve and Muscle
      • MEDSCI 311 Cardiovascular Biology
      • MEDSCI 312 Endocrinology of Growth and Metabolism
      • MEDSCI 313 Reproductive Biology
      • MEDSCI 314 Immunology
      • MEDSCI 315 Nutrition, Diet and Gene Interactions
      • MEDSCI 316 Sensory Neuroscience: From Molecules to Disease
      • MEDSCI 317 Integrative Neuroscience: From Fetus to Adult
      • MEDSCI 318 Pharmacokinetics and Drug Toxicity
      • MEDSCI 320 Pharmacology of the Brain and Body
  • A 15-point capstone course, BIOMED 399, which must be completed in the final year of study

Enrolling in the Program

After completing the first year of study, students can choose to enroll in the Cancer Biology and Therapeutics pathway using the Choose your pathway form.
