Co-op Programs

The Co-op Programs at the University of Ottawa offer students the opportunity to gain practical work experience in their field of study.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the Co-op Programs, students must:


  • Be registered full-time in the Master of Communication program (by coursework) and maintain a full-time status during all study terms, including the one after the last work term
  • Have an admission average of B+ (75%) and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 7.0 (B+ or 75%) in courses taken at the University of Ottawa
  • Start the program in the fall term (this is necessary due to co-op placement cycles)

Work/Study Sequences

The work/study sequence for the Co-op Programs is as follows:


  • Year 1: Study (Fall), Study (Winter), Work Term 1 (Summer)
  • Year 2: Work Term 2 (Fall), Study (Winter)

Co-op Fees

Co-op students are required to pay co-op fees for the session before their first work term and for every work term, up to and including their last one.

  • Canada School of Public Service
  • Environment and Climate Change Canada
  • Health Canada
  • Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada
  • Public Services and Procurement Canada
  • University of Ottawa

Tasks at Work

Examples of tasks that students may be assigned to during their work terms include:


  • Assessment of crisis communication strategies
  • Communication strategy needs analysis (internal/external)
  • Design, preparation, and implementation of communication plans (internal, crisis, strategic, event-based, etc.)
  • Development and/or assessment of a promotional campaign (in health or other areas)
  • Development and/or assessment of media strategies (social media use)
  • Development of organizational communication training
  • Internal communication needs analysis

Work Term Reports

Guidelines for work term reports are provided.


Academic Coordinators

Academic coordinators are available to support students in the Co-op Programs.


How to Apply

To apply for the Co-op Programs, students must:


  • Have an admission average of 75% (B+) or higher
  • Apply to co-op after starting their studies at the University of Ottawa
  • Follow the steps to apply through the Experiential Learning Platform (Co-op Portal) on uoZone

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the Co-op Programs is September 30 of the first year of studies.
