Public Relations (PR) as a Career Field Introduction to Strategic Press and Public Relations
Course Description
The profession of public relations offers a wide range of entry-level opportunities for career starters. Strategic communication management is indispensable in companies, associations, science, politics, and art. But what is PR, and how can it be used purposefully? What are the essential building blocks of good PR? How does it differ from marketing and advertising? What does political PR need to consider in comparison to, for example, corporate PR? What PR instruments are available, and how can they be applied in a targeted manner? What is behind guerrilla PR, and what opportunities do new developments around social media offer? Why is a PR strategy an important key to PR success? These questions and more will be explored in this course.
Course Content
The course is practice-oriented. In addition to brief theoretical input sessions, students will explore PR topics through exercises and PR case studies in small groups and presentations in the plenum. As part of a writing workshop, students will also deal with different text formats, such as press releases, targeted audience appeals, and press invitations to press conferences. The goal is for each student to develop a PR strategy based on a given example or their own ideas and present it at the end. Additionally, PR experts from practice will be invited, and excursions will be organized.
