Overview

The Certificate in Race, Sport, and Leadership is a unique professional development program designed to meet the ever-changing needs of those working in sports at all levels, focusing on the prevalence of race. The School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) designed the Race, Sport, and Leadership curriculum to make use of the school's faculty's cutting-edge, industry-leading research.

Program Details

This certificate demonstrates the school's commitment to its industry partners—and in particular, those working in urban communities—who, in turn, benefit from the latest and most relevant research. Academic experts manage this unique certificate, which grounds participants in both research and practice. It brings together learning from and collaboration with a handful of nationally recognized partners, supporting professionals in developing first-rate and highly relevant skills as well as strategy.

Program Partners

The program has strategic partnerships to fit the needs of organizations. A key partner in this project includes Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. Through these collaborations, the Certificate in Race, Sport, and Leadership provides a comprehensive curriculum that supports the professional development of individuals who seek to be highly effective leaders in an ever-changing, diverse society.

Program Format

The Certificate in Race, Sport, and Leadership operates in two tracks: asynchronous individual model or a cohort model. Both tracks cover the same eight modules that are broken into four sections.

  • The individual track operates on a rolling admission and all content is accessible via an online platform.
    • The Certificate program can also operate in a cohort model with customizable checkpoints and meetings.
    • A cohort model is recommended if an organization would like to enroll five or more participants.
  • Within the cohort track, participants engage with fellow participants through an online learning management system to support their continued growth and apply the learning outcomes from the previous module(s).
  • Participants also have the opportunity to co-create knowledge by learning from one another and each person's varied experiences.

Modules

The program consists of eight modules, divided into four sections:

  • Section #1: Foundations of Race and Self
    • Module 1 – Race and its Significance in Sport
    • Module 2 – Understanding Positionality
  • Section #2: Racially Minoritized Populations
    • Module 3 – Racially Minoritized Athletes
    • Module 4 – Racially Minoritized Professionals
  • Section #3: Leading in Racialized Sport Organizations Pt. I
    • Module 5 – Developing a Leadership Philosophy
    • Module 6 – Building Racial Trust
  • Section #4: Leading in Racialized Sport Organizations Pt. II
    • Module 7 – Authenticity, Race, and Leadership
    • Module 8 – Moving Forward

Professional Development Credits

The Certificate in Race, Sport, and Leadership is eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and ACT 48 Credit. CEUs are beneficial for general professional development credit and can potentially be applied towards professional development requirements of specific organizations. In the state of Pennsylvania, educators holding public school certification are required to participate in professional development, known as Act 48. The Certificate in Race, Sport, and Leadership has been approved for ACT 48.
