Program Overview

The University of Waikato exchange program is a study abroad opportunity for students to expand their academic and cultural experiences in New Zealand.


Academic Program

Exchange participants are required to take a full-time course load of at least 12 Temple credits while abroad and will earn transfer credit. A typical full-time workload at the University of Waikato is 60 credit points per semester, which typically equates to 4 papers (courses), as most are worth 15 credit points.

  • Best for: The University of Waikato has offerings across many different majors and fields, including arts, humanities, Maori and indigenous studies, social sciences, environmental science, computing and mathematical sciences, education, engineering, health, and more.

Location & Facilities

  • Location: Temple students will study at the University of Waikato's Hamilton campus, which is a multicultural hub offering the resources of a university campus connected to nature.
  • Facilities: The campus has comprehensive facilities, including a library, student center, computer labs, coffee shops, and a health center. Students also have access to an on-campus gym, an Olympic-sized pool, various sport fields, and a recreational dance room.

Program Dates

The University of Waikato follows a southern hemisphere academic calendar, with the year beginning in February and ending in November.


  • A Trimester (Spring): mid-February - late June
  • B Trimester (Fall): early July - early November
  • Calendar Year (Spring/Fall): late February through early November

Housing

Students may choose to live in on-campus housing, university-arranged homestays, or find independent housing.


  • On-campus Housing: Guaranteed for exchange students, with different housing options available, including College Hall, Bryant Hall, Student Village, or apartment-style.
  • Homestay: Students who want to experience the culture firsthand may choose to live in a homestay, with host families located around Hamilton, close to public transport.
  • Independent Housing: Students may choose to find off-campus, independent housing in rentals or flats.

Faculty & On-site Support

As an Exchange Program participant, students will have access to the support provided by the host institution, including the International Student Support Team, Student Learning resources, and Rainbow Alliance.


Program Costs

  • Program Deposit: A non-refundable program deposit of $400 within 2 weeks of nomination to the program.
  • Temple Tuition and Standard University Fees: Students pay Temple tuition and fees directly to Temple.

Health & Safety

The health and safety of students abroad are the highest priority.


Eligibility

Temple programs are open to qualified students matriculated at any U.S. or Canadian college or university.


  • Requirements:
    • Enrolled full-time and will have completed 2 semesters before studying abroad.
    • In good academic standing and meet minimum GPA requirement for the program (2.5 on a 4.0 scale, with exceptions for certain programs).
    • Have a valid passport.
    • In good disciplinary standing.
    • Meet the minimum age requirement (at least 18 years old at the time of application).
  • Additional considerations for the University of Waikato: Students will be selected mainly based on academic fit and demonstrated interest in the host university and/or location.

Application Requirements

The standard application requirements pertain to all students applying to Temple programs.


  • Additional Requirements for the University of Waikato: All students applying for an exchange program are required to meet with a program manager before submitting their application.

Admissions Timeline

  • Admissions is not rolling.
  • Temple nominates students for Exchange Programs after the deadline for the specific term.
  • Once the application is submitted, a decision can be expected by the decision deadline, about one month after the program application deadline has passed.
