Introduction to Radiology for Physiotherapists

The Radiology for Physiotherapists program is designed to deepen knowledge of radiology and its application to the neuro-musculo-skeletal system. This short course is tailored for physiotherapists seeking to build on their existing knowledge, particularly in the area of musculoskeletal physiotherapy.


What You Will Learn

The program focuses on contemporary skills and knowledge, aiming to enhance patient outcomes through a better understanding of imaging modalities and their applications. Key areas of study include:


  • Image interpretation using various imaging modalities such as x-ray, CT scans, MRI, and Ultrasound to explore normal anatomy and pathological findings.
  • Understanding when and how to use imaging, including the selection of appropriate imaging modalities for specific conditions and recognizing when onward referral to another clinician is necessary.
  • Developing a comprehensive understanding of radiology reports to correlate findings with images effectively.

Fees

The fee for the Radiology for Physiotherapists course is $4,464 AUD (inclusive of GST) for individuals taking the course as a stand-alone program.

The course is scheduled to start on 27 July 2026, with a duration of 5 days. Registration closes on 23 June 2026. It is advisable to register early, as the course may reach its maximum capacity prior to the deadline.


Course Details

Overview

This course is specifically designed for physiotherapists with experience in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. To be considered for entry, applicants must have an undergraduate qualification in physiotherapy and a minimum of 12 months of clinical experience in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

The program has been developed in partnership with Queensland Health and related agencies, aiming to provide physiotherapists with expert, tailored knowledge that can be immediately applied in their practice.

The intended learning outcomes include:


  • Advanced knowledge of imaging techniques
  • Appreciation of when and how to request imaging and which modality to use for a particular condition
  • Advanced skills in understanding the interpretation and clinical implications of radiological findings
  • Appropriate skills in the interpretation of pathology, with awareness of the limitations
  • A better understanding of radiology reports to enable correlation of findings with images

Who You Will Learn From

The course is presented in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences, with subject coordinators including Dr. Guy Zito and Dr. Jodie Davey, and radiology presenters Dr. Frank Malara and Dr. Andrew Rotstein.


Workload and Assessment

The total time commitment for this course is approximately 108 hours, consisting of 36 hours of lectures, workshops, and tutorials, and approximately 72 hours of self-directed learning. Assessment includes:


  • Case presentation
  • A 1-hour online multi-station written radiology exam
  • Two written assignments of 1500 and 2000 words, respectively

Entry Requirements

To be considered for entry, applicants must have completed an undergraduate qualification in Physiotherapy and have a minimum of 12 months of clinical experience in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Supporting documentation includes transcripts for all university courses, a health practitioner registration certificate, and a resume outlining work experience.
