Course Structure
The program is a five-year full-time degree, with largely core modules in Years One and Two. The third year is spent working in industry, and Years Four and Five have a balance of core and optional modules.
- Year One: Core modules include Engineering Maths and Computation, Fundamentals of Civil Engineering, and Applied Design and Practice
- Year Two: Core modules include Engineering Analysis, Building Modelling, Environmental Engineering, and Hydraulics and Soil Mechanics
- Year Three: Industrial Training, spent working in industry
- Year Four: Core modules include Hydrology and Hydraulics, Project, Digital and Computational Architectural, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Geotechnical Engineering
- Year Five: Core modules include Soil and Groundwater Chemistry, Industrial Practice, and Professional Engineering Studies, as well as optional modules
Learning and Assessment
Teaching is through lectures, tutorials, and practical laboratory and project-based work. Assessments include tests, exams, presentations, and project reports.
- Learning Outcomes: The program aims to develop knowledge, understanding, and skills in areas such as mathematics, statistics, natural science, and engineering principles
- Intellectual Skills: Students will develop skills in selecting and applying appropriate computational and analytical techniques, evaluating technical literature, and designing solutions for complex problems
- Professional Practical Skills: Students will develop practical skills in laboratory and workshop work, selecting and applying appropriate materials and equipment, and using a risk management process to identify and mitigate risks
Careers
Graduates from this program are mainly employed in the civil engineering industry, with major consultancy and contracting firms. Typical roles include graduate civil engineer, site engineer, or design engineer.
- Career Prospects: Graduates have gone on to work for companies such as Sir Robert McAlpine, Ramboll, Arup, and Mott McDonald
- Further Study: Some graduates have opted for further study, either at MSc or PhD level, at Cardiff University or other institutions.
