Medical Pharmacology (BSc)

Overview

The Medical Pharmacology (BSc) program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of pharmacology, including the principles of drug action, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. The program aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in medical research, the pharmaceutical industry, or other related fields.

Entry Requirements

  • A Level: AAB-ABB, including Chemistry and one other science subject from Biology, Maths, Physics, or Statistics.
  • International Baccalaureate: 34-32 overall or 666-665 in 3 HL subjects, including grade 5 in HL Chemistry and a second science subject at HL.
  • Baccalaureate Wales: Accepted in lieu of one A-Level, excluding any specified subjects.
  • GCSE and Other Essential Requirements: English language or Welsh language at GCSE grade B/6 or an equivalent, and GCSE Maths grade B/6 or equivalent qualification.
  • English Language Requirements: GCSE Grade B or 6 in GCSE English Language, IELTS (academic) at least 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each subskill, TOEFL iBT at least 100 overall with a minimum of 20 in each subskill, PTE Academic at least 76 overall with a minimum of 62 in all communicative skills, or Trinity ISE II/III at least a Merit in all components.

Course Structure

The program consists of three years of study, with the option to apply for a Professional Placement Year (PPY) in the third year. The course structure includes:


  • Year One: Five 20-credit core double modules and a 20-credit Pharmacology introductory module.
  • Year Two: Six 20-credit core modules, including a dedicated 'practical-only' module and a 'research techniques' module.
  • Year Three: Six 10-credit core modules, a 40-credit compulsory Research Project, and three 10-credit optional modules from which students must choose two.

Learning and Assessment

  • Core Knowledge and Understanding: Acquired via lectures, seminars, group discussions, tutorials, and other group work.
  • Assessment: Summative assessment is primarily by means of unseen written examinations, generally in combination with an in-course element.
  • Skills Practised and Developed: IT competency, performing and interpreting statistical analyses of data, working effectively as an individual and in a team, demonstrating effective time management, and showing awareness of ethical issues relating to biological sciences.

  • Career Prospects: The program can lead to careers in medical and scientific research, pharmaceutical and biological industries, and is also suitable for a wide range of graduate training schemes.
  • Placements: Students have the option to apply for a Professional Placement Year, which provides an opportunity to gain first-hand research experience and develop important practical skills.
