English (B.A) (two subjects/teaching profession profile)
The English degree programme covers the entire range of anglophone language and culture, from the mastery of the language to literature, culture, and new media. Study foci include English Literature and Cultural Science, the English Language and Literature of the Middle Ages, American Studies, and Linguistics. Prospective teachers will acquire essential specialized didactic knowledge.

The educational objective is to provide graduates with the ability to work independently on scientific papers and become competent in the language, literature, and culture of English-speaking countries.
Philology (Sprachwissenschaft)
- Knowledge of the structures, functions, and rules of contemporary English
- Competence to use established and appropriate methodological analysis of spoken and written English
- Knowledge of basic terms, methods, and results of synchronic and diachronic philology
- Knowledge of the historical development of the English language, including older versions
Literature and Culture Studies (Literatur und Kulturwissenschaft)
- Knowledge of primary specialized terminology, theories, and methodology
- Overview of the history of British and North American literature and culture
- Ability to extrapolate appropriately from diverse literary texts
Language Practice (Sprachpraxis)
- Standardized and assured command of contemporary spoken and written English
- Ability to understand English texts, including translation from German into English
Culture, History, and Institutions (Landeskunde)
- Knowledge of basic aspects of modern British and American history
- Knowledge of essential geographical, political, social, economic, and cultural facts
