Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Caucasus Studies is a unique program in Europe, offering expert knowledge of the Caucasus region with a highly individualized level of supervision. The program consists of a linguistic and sociocultural focus and can be profiled in various directions, including Political Science, European Ethnology/Cultural History, Religious Studies, Southeast European Studies, Slavonic Studies, or Indo-European Studies.

Programme Summary

This master's program provides a comprehensive understanding of the Caucasus region, with a focus on linguistic and sociocultural aspects. Students are required to spend one semester at a different institution, either in Halle (with a focus on Armenian studies) or at one of the partner universities in the Caucasus, for example in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Admission Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent: A subject-specific undergraduate degree (minimum 6 semesters/180 ECTS-Credits) or an equivalent degree is required.
  • Language requirements: Proficiencies in two modern foreign languages and, if applicable, additional language proficiency in languages of the Caucasian linguistic family or the Caucasus contact languages. International applicants must have German language proficiency at a minimum level of DSH-2 (or a recognized equivalent).

  • CV: A tabular form containing key information on school records and academic careers.
  • Motivation letter: A letter not exceeding two DIN A4 pages, elaborating on the motivation for taking up this course of studies.
  • University entrance qualification certificate: The school graduation diploma (e.g., German "Abitur") that makes the applicant eligible for studies at a university.
  • Previous university degrees earned: All previous university degrees (if available) or a note on the anticipated date of issue of the degree certificate.
  • Detailed transcript of records: A transcript containing an overall cumulative grade point average or average mark.
  • Proof of relevant work experience: Certificates supporting subject-specific work experience (if applicable).
