Program Overview
The lateral entry master's program in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (Q-Master ET/IT) prepares students to teach electrical engineering and information technology at vocational schools. This program allows individuals who have studied electrical engineering or a similar subject at a university or university of applied sciences to pursue a Master of Education without having to complete a bachelor's degree with teacher training first.
Admission Requirements
- A first university degree qualifying for professional work is required.
- A formal requirement for admission is a first university degree in electrical engineering or a related subject field.
- Proof of an additional 48 credit points in information technology is required to register the master's thesis.
- The program is taught in German, and applicants with a foreign school-leaving certificate must provide proof of German skills at a specific level.
- Interest in and understanding of teaching methodology and education are necessary.
- Being independent and a self-starter is advantageous.
Program Structure
- The program teaches knowledge and skills in the subject area, teaching methodology, and educational sciences.
- Additional focus is placed on language acquisition/German as a second language, inclusion, and dealing with heterogeneity.
- The curriculum includes:
- Teaching methodology, education, and language acquisition/German as a second language (88 LP)
- Specialization in information technology (12 LP)
- Elective unit (5 LP)
- Master's thesis (15 LP)
- A proposed course schedule is available, recommending how to complete the degree program within four semesters.
Study and Examination Regulations
The study and examination regulations provide detailed information about the program, including the curriculum, admission requirements, and examination procedures. The most current version of the regulations applies to applicants.

- Modules include various study and teaching formats such as lectures, practical tutorials, seminars, and practical projects.
- Students must earn a specific number of credit points and complete certain coursework and assessments in each module.
- A module list offers a current overview of all modules in the program, including mandatory and elective modules.
Internships
- A prevocational internship lasting 26 weeks must be completed by the time of registering the final thesis.
- Vocational training and other practical activities already completed in companies can be recognized.
- The practical semester is a fixed component of the teacher training master's course, generally completed at a school during the third course semester.
Stays Abroad
- The topic of internationalization is increasingly important for teacher training students.
- Parts of the curriculum can be completed abroad, providing valuable experiences for working with a diverse student body.
- Information about opportunities for teacher training students is available on the School of Education website.
Acquired Skills
- The skills acquired in the program form the foundation for student teaching at vocational schools or other pedagogical work.
- Graduates possess knowledge of social, cultural, and gender-related conditions of teaching and learning, and can apply pedagogical diagnostics to heterogeneous learning groups.
- They have a flexible range of skills to react and respond to events and changes professionally.
After Studies
- The lateral entry master's degree program qualifies graduates for vocational work and teaching at schools.
- The combination of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology prepares graduates for a career in education.
