Study Overview Applied Mathematics

The Applied Mathematics program is a solid academic program that delves into the nature of mathematics, focusing on its abstract and formal aspects while keeping in mind its practical applicability. Students will become familiar with analysis, linear structures, statistics, and more, and will engage in applying the theory through modeling, using abstraction to reduce complex problems to their essence and then using mathematical analysis to identify solutions.

Modules Applied Mathematics

The three-year Bachelor's in Applied Mathematics consists of twelve modules, four modules per year, each covering a theme that brings together all the main aspects of the studies: theory and practice, research and solution design, self-study, and teamwork.

Year 1

  • Module 1 | Structures & Models:
    • Analysis 1: fundamental properties of functions, limits, derivatives, and integrals.
    • Linear Structures 1: studying structures abstractly to make general statements.
    • Python programming language and the skill of modeling.
  • Module 2 | Structures & Systems:
    • Expansion of knowledge of the abstract foundation of mathematics.
    • Application of abstract knowledge on Systems Theory.
  • Module 3 | Signals & Uncertainty:
    • Probability and statistics for making sensible predictions.
    • Mathematics of Signals and Transforms to unravel periodicity in data.
  • Module 4 | Numerical Mathematics and Differential Equations:
    • Mathematical models involving dynamics.
    • Differential Equations and Numerical Mathematics for solving real-life applications.

Year 2

  • Module 5 | Statistics & Analysis:
    • Mathematical statistics and advanced analysis.
    • Application of statistical techniques to analyze data.
  • Module 6 | Statistics & Optimisation:
    • Introduction to Linear Optimisation.
    • Expansion of statistics knowledge and application to a neural network.
  • Module 7 | Discrete Structures & Efficient Algorithms:
    • Study of discrete structures and making calculations within such sets.
    • Use of elements from abstract algebra and finite automata.
  • Module 8 | Modelling & Analysis of Stochastic Processes:
    • Markov chains for modeling queues and complex stochastic systems.
    • Application of models to make good decisions in practical situations.

Year 3

  • Modules 9&10 | Electives:
    • Options include taking subjects from other universities, joining student teams, or completing a pre-master's.
    • Possibility of choosing the Education minor to get a second-degree teaching qualification.
  • Modules 11&12 | Preparing and finalising BSc thesis and Electives:
    • Dedication to the thesis, a large modeling assignment often taken from real life.
    • Additional coursework and preparation for the graduation project.

FIRST TIME AT UNIVERSITY

For first-year students, the program explains the structure of completing modules, each addressing a theme hot in society, business, or industry, and including a team project to apply acquired knowledge to a current challenge.

Study Points

  • Student workload is expressed in EC (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).
  • Each credit represents 28 hours of work, with 60 credits needed each year.
  • The first year requires at least 45 out of 60 points to continue to the second year.

Binding Recommendation

  • The principle of a binding recommendation is used to ensure students are in the right place.
  • A positive recommendation is given if 45 or more EC are obtained in the first year.
  • Support is available for personal circumstances interfering with study performance.
