Study Overview
The Bachelor's in Public Administration is a three-year program that integrates the core subjects of public administration with profound knowledge of how modern technologies impact society. This modern public administration study focuses on designing policies to solve societal challenges caused by technology transformations. Students will learn how to conduct research, analyze, interpret, and contribute to solutions for challenges faced by governments and public organizations.
Contents of the Modules
The program consists of twelve modules, four per year, each covering a theme and bringing together all main aspects of the studies: theory and practice, research and solution design, self-study, and teamwork.
Overview Modules
- Year 1:
- Module 1: Data security (15 credits) - Introduction to computer security, cybercrime, and modern public administration.
- Module 2: The challenge of mass-migration (15 credits) - Designing solution proposals for complex challenges like mass migration.
- Module 3: Smart health policies (15 credits) - Designing effective health policies based on solid evidence.
- Module 4: Public management (15 credits) - Introduction to modern theories of public management and program implementation.
- Year 2:
- Module 5: Sustainable cities (15 credits) - Exploring challenges faced by cities and designing governance structures for technology-driven city projects.
- Module 6: Evaluation of tech-society (15 credits) - Focusing on evaluation to get a well-informed perspective on the future.
- Modules 7&8: Specialisation (30 credits) - Choice between two specialisations: Public Administration and Global and European Studies.
- Public Administration: Specialising in top-down and bottom-up decision-making.
- Global and European Studies: Focusing on the international and European dimensions of societal challenges.
- Year 3:
- Modules 9&10: Electives (30 credits) - Taking modules at the University of Twente or another university, or studying abroad.
- Additional Modules: Opportunity to take additional modules from different academic disciplines.
- Study Abroad or Internship: Option to devote the first half of the final year to studying abroad or an internship.
- Modules 11&12: Bachelor's assignment (30 credits) - Writing a thesis and carrying out research on a topic linked to ongoing faculty research.
First Time at a University
For first-year students, the program explains new experiences such as completing modules, understanding study points (ECs), and the requirement to achieve at least 45 ECs in the first year to continue with the program.
