Pre-master's Programme

The pre-master's programme is a transfer programme for students of a Dutch university of applied sciences or a Dutch research university who cannot be admitted directly to the master's they wish to follow. The goal is to bridge the gap between the current bachelor's and the future master's.

What applies to you?

The programme depends on the previous or current education.

• University of applied sciences (Dutch HBO) As a bachelor's student from a Dutch university of applied sciences (HBO), it is mandatory to follow a pre-master's first to prepare for the Master's in Humanitarian Engineering. The pre-master's will teach various scientific skills and improve skills in mathematics with courses such as Academic Research Skills and Basic Statistics.
  • Study load: The Pre-Master's is a six-monthly, full-time study programme of 30 EC, which must be completed within one year.
  • Language: The Pre-Master's programme is taught in English.
  • Admission requirements and how to apply: To qualify for the (Pre-)Master's in Humanitarian Engineering, certain conditions must be met. The application process depends on whether the Pre-Master's is taken during or after the HBO bachelor's.
  • Costs: The fee is per EC, and this Pre-Master's is 30 EC. Each academic year, the amount per EC will be reassessed.
• Dutch research university (Dutch WO) As a bachelor's student of a Dutch research university, it is necessary to find out if directly admissible or if the Pre-Master's is required first. This may be necessary if the Master's comprises a slightly different field of study than the current bachelor's.
  • Contents and study load: The Pre-Master's is tailor-made, with no fixed format. The content and study workload depend on the previous education and can vastly differ.
  • Start date: The start date of the tailor-made Pre-Master's is determined in consultation with the study adviser.
  • Language: The Pre-Master's programme is taught in English.
  • Admission requirements: The admission requirements depend on the previous bachelor's or master's.
  • How to apply and deadlines: If it is determined that a pre-master's is required, sign up for the master's of choice first. Before starting the application procedure, check the application deadlines.
  • Costs: To follow a pre-master's, pay an amount per EC, with the total amount based on the number of EC's the pre-master's consists of.
• International education As a student holding a foreign degree, it is only possible to apply for the master's directly and not participate in a pre-master's.
  • Check if the admission requirements are met.

What is expected of you?

The pre-master's programme is designed to address any deficiencies in prior knowledge and to determine if studying at a research university is right for you.

• The pre-Master's programme must be successfully completed within one year.
• There is a maximum number of re-sits per course.
• If the Pre-Master's is not successfully completed, it is not possible to start a pre-master's in another programme at the faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente.
