  • The next re-accreditation is scheduled for December 2025.

Joint Degree

  • The MScPH program has been designated as a BUA-Joint Degree since September 2021, recognizing its research-oriented and interdisciplinary approach.
  • This designation is awarded to cooperative study programs of the Berlin University Alliance that address topics of global significance and demonstrate a strong international profile.

What is Public Health?

Public health, also known as health sciences, deals with the conditions for health and the management of disease, to the extent that they are based on the natural, technical, and social environment of humans.

  • Public health is an interdisciplinary field that works through scientific cooperation between various disciplines to develop solutions for improving the overall health situation of society.
  • It involves the use of epidemiological methods to analyze health-related political and economic frameworks, investigate health care systems, consider the interactions between humans and their environment, and research social structures and health-related behaviors.

Program Concept and Structure

  • The MScPH program is designed as a full-time study program with daily lectures (about 20 hours) and additional preparation and follow-up time (about 20 hours per week), resulting in a student investment time of approximately 40 hours per week.
  • The program includes compulsory and elective modules, allowing for individual specialization and the development of own interests.
  • A mobility window for a stay abroad is provided in the third semester, offering opportunities for the acquisition of additional competencies.

Semesters and Modules

1. Semester

  • Compulsory modules include Kern 1 (Disease distribution and approaches), MET 1 (Population health research and epidemiological research methods), and HPP 1 (Prevention and health promotion as an interdisciplinary challenge).
  • Two of four basic modules must be chosen, depending on the student's background.

2. Semester

  • Compulsory modules include PHD 1 (Society and health), HPE 1 (Health systems), and MET 2 (Methods of epidemiology and statistics in population health research).
  • Two additional modules must be selected from the areas of health determinants and health promotion/prevention.

3. Semester

  • The focus is on preparing the master's thesis, with the compulsory module Kern 2 (Public health challenges and answers).
  • An additional elective module must be chosen, and the remaining 18 ECTS can be freely selected from the advanced study area of other universities in Berlin, Germany, or abroad, provided there is a connection to public health.

4. Semester

  • Dedicated to working on the master's thesis, which should demonstrate the ability to independently handle a clearly defined topic or problem in public health within the given timeframe.
  • A colloquium accompanies the master's thesis.

Career Prospects

  • Graduates of the MScPH program are qualified for research-oriented and applied work in the health sector.
  • They can pursue careers in health administration, health policy, planning, and management of health care facilities, organizations, and associations.
  • The program also prepares students for further academic education, such as a Ph.D. in public health or related fields.

Downloads and Information

  • Various documents, including study handbooks, examination regulations, and information sheets, are available for download.
  • These resources provide detailed information on the program structure, module descriptions, admission requirements, and examination procedures.
