Mathematics with Applications

Overview

This Structured Elective provides students with the fundamental mathematical concepts and techniques that form the basic language and tools of large parts of modern science.

Benefits

With the rise of high-powered computational tools and data science, scientific inquiry in the 21st century is increasingly based on, or supplemented by, mathematical models. Mathematical modelling and problem-solving skills are much sought after by employers. This Structured Elective will provide students with these skills and give them familiarity with many of the quantitative methods used in modern science.

Eligibility

  • Structured Electives are available to undergraduate students only.
    • Students must take the specified modules in or after 2014/15.
  • To be awarded this Structured Elective, students must take 15 credits from the list of modules outlined below.
  • Students will not be awarded this Structured Elective if they are graduating with a major or minor listed in the Eligibility section.

Module Requirements

  • Students need to complete three modules to achieve the required credits for this Structured Elective.
  • Students must complete at least one of MST20070 and MATH20290, and at least one of MST20050 and MATH20260.
  • The following modules are available:
    • MATH20290: Multivariable Calculus for Eng (5 credits)
    • MST20070: Multivariable Calculus with Apps (5 credits)
