Introduction to the Erasmus Exchange Programme

The Erasmus Exchange Programme is a European education and training programme aimed at third-level educational institutions and funded by the European Commission. This programme provides students at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems with the opportunity to study in Europe for a number of weeks.

Programme Objectives

The programme aims to promote exchanges of students between universities in EU Member States, the European Economic Area (EEA) and newly participating countries, to support the pan-European mobility of university staff and to promote the joint development of European study programmes.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Erasmus Exchange Programme, students should have a GPA of above 3.0 and must have fully passed clinical placement on their first attempt. Students going to Spain or France should have strong language skills in the native language of the country.

Programme Duration

The placements are of eight or twelve weeks duration. Students will be notified if their application has been successful in July after the release of the final results.

Application Procedure

Once a student receives confirmation of being nominated by the School, they must complete the Erasmus online application form on their SIS Student Web account. UCD Global will send the student's name and contact details to their host university, and in most cases, the host university will then contact the student directly.

Host Universities

The UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems has partnerships with several universities in Europe, including:

  • Turku University, Finland
  • University of Lund, Sweden
  • University of Skövde, Sweden (for Midwifery students)
  • Karolinska Institute, Sweden
  • University College Copenhagen, Denmark
  • University of Seville, Spain
  • CHU IFSI Lionnois, France
  • Henallux University, Belgium

Erasmus Grants

The Erasmus application on SIS Student Web serves as the application for the Erasmus grant, and there is no separate application procedure. The grant amount varies depending on where the student is going and for how long, but it is based on a monthly amount of either 200 or 250. The grant is paid by electronic transfer to the student's bank account in approximately February.

Required Documents

To receive the Erasmus grant, students must complete the following three documents:

  1. The Study Abroad Declaration, which is a UCD requirement.
  2. The Erasmus Financial Agreement, which is a requirement of the HEA.
  3. The Arrival Certificate, which must be completed by the host institution and returned to UCD International.

Accommodation and Travel

UCD does not arrange accommodation for students in partner universities. Students are responsible for booking their own flights and accommodation, but it is recommended that they do not book until they have received official acceptance from their host institution.
