Version History

  • VT24
  • VT26

Basdata

  • Course Code: 1BI047
  • Course Name: Patologi
  • Higher Education Credits: 3
  • Education Form: Higher Education, 2007 Study Order
  • Main Field: Biomedicine
  • Level: G2 - Basic Level 2
  • Grading Scale: Failed (U), Passed (G), or Passed with Distinction (VG)
  • Course Responsible Institution: Department of Laboratory Medicine
  • Decision-Making Body: Established by: PN Biomedicine
  • Date of Establishment:
  • Course Plan Applies From: Spring Term 2026

Special Eligibility

  • Minimum grade G on courses Introduction to Biomedicine, General and Organic Chemistry, Cell, Stem Cell and Developmental Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Genomics and Functional Genomics, Chemical Biology, and Tissue Biology, as well as minimum grade G on the moments Laboratory Work and Seminars (4 hp) and Project Work (2 hp) on the course Immunology and Microbiology, and minimum grade G on the moment Practical Moments (4 hp) on the course Neuroscience, on the Bachelor's Program in Biomedicine.

Objectives

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the causes and effects of different types of cellular adaptations and cell death, and histologically recognize them.
  • Explain the mechanisms behind tissue repair and regeneration.
  • Explain the concept of inflammation and the mechanisms involved in inflammation.
  • Explain the basics of carcinogenesis, tumor progression, and tumor morphology and genetics.
  • Choose suitable molecular analysis methods for different pathological cases.
  • Account for the rules regarding biobanks.

Content

Initially, the theory behind tumor pathology and various basic pathological concepts, such as cell damage, cell death, and wound healing, are presented. The focus of the course is on understanding the histopathological appearance of different organ systems and their connection to their functions. Clinical examples where different tissue analysis methods are used will be discussed. The results of a laboratory project are evaluated by the student.

Teaching Methods

The teaching will be in the form of lectures, digital microscopy of histological preparations, demonstrations, seminars, and an experimental tissue analysis project.

Examination

  • Part 1: Laboratory-based project. The examination consists of a written experimental tissue analysis project. The results of the written report are graded U/G.
  • Part 2: Integration of theory and tissue analysis. The examination consists of a written exam that covers the entire course content. Graded U/G/VG.
  • To pass the entire course, a passing grade must be obtained for all parts of the course. The final grade for the entire course is based on the grade for part 2 (written exam).

Other Regulations

  • The course is given in English.
  • Course evaluation will be conducted according to the guidelines established by the Committee for Education at the Basic and Advanced Level.
