Graduate Certificate in Forests and Climate Change
The Graduate Certificate in Forests and Climate Change provides a thorough foundation for assessing the impacts of climate change on forests, evaluating proposed adaptation strategies, and developing management practices to enhance forest carbon sequestration for the mitigation of climate change.
Curriculum
The 21-credit Graduate Certificate in Forests and Climate Change includes both the theory and application of climate change science. Throughout the curriculum, students work closely with a faculty mentor and other students on an independent project.
Required Courses (15 credits)
- FES 511 - Case Studies in Forests and Climate Change (1 credit)
- FES/MNR 500 - Market Tools for Managing Greenhouse Gas Emissions (3 credits)
- FES 536 - Carbon Sequestration in Forests (3 credits)
- MNR 538 - Adapting Forests to Climate Change (3 credits)
- MNR 550 - Climate Change Impacts on Forest Ecosystems (3 credits)
- SNR 570 - Independent Project in Natural Resource Sustainability (2 credits)
Elective Courses (6 credits)
Students take 6 credits of elective courses within the OSU Natural Resources curriculum to satisfy the 21-credit FCC requirement. Elective courses include:
- BEE 511 - Global Environmental Change: Using Data to Inform Decisions (3 credits)
- FES 527 - Forest Carbon Analysis for Assessments and Policy Agreements (3 credits)
- MNR 519 - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Natural Resource Management (3 credits)
- SNR 530 - Ecological Principles of Sustainable Natural Resources (3 credits)
- SNR 540 - Global Environmental Change (3 credits)
Program Details
- Credits Required: 21 quarter credits (equivalent to 14 semester credits)
- Cost per Credit: $582 (based on current tuition rates, with no additional charge for nonresident students)
- Delivery: Online (with the option to complete all or nearly all requirements online)
- Start Terms: 3 per year (fall, winter, and spring terms)

For curriculum details, please refer to Oregon State's academic catalog. SNR 570 should be taken in the final term, and FES 511 should be taken before SNR 570, when ready to start the capstone project. Additional elective courses will be considered in consultation with the FCC program director.
