Introduction to the Program
The Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft program at Freie Universit酹 Berlin is a transdisciplinary, social, and humanities-focused field that researches and contributes to the design of media communication. This program encompasses all areas of direct and media-mediated public communication, including organizational communication and digital and network-based communication.
Program Structure
The program is offered as a 90 LP core subject or a 60 LP module package in the combined bachelor's program. As a core subject, Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft is combined with a 60 LP module package or two 30 LP module packages.
Core Subject: 90 LP
The 90 LP core subject includes a compulsory section with six modules, a elective section, and the study area of General Professional Preparation (ABV). The compulsory section covers:
- Introduction to Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft A
- History and Structures of the Media System
- Methods: Theoretical Foundations, Data Collection, and Statistics
- Journalism Research and Organizational Communication
- Media Impact and Public Sphere
- Communication Science Research
The elective section requires the selection of two out of three elective modules:
- Media Practice
- Perspectives on Public Communication
- Methodological Deepening: Research Practice
Module Package: 60 LP
The 60 LP module package includes a compulsory section with five modules and an elective section with one out of two elective modules. The compulsory section covers:
- Introduction to Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft B
- History and Structures of the Media System
- Journalism Research and Organizational Communication
- Theoretical Foundations, Data Collection, and Statistics
- Media Impact and Public Sphere
The elective section requires the selection of one out of two elective modules:
- Perspectives on Public Communication
- Media Practice
Admission Requirements
- Local admission restrictions apply for the core subject but not for the 60 LP module package.
- English language proficiency at the B1 level (GER) is required.
- The program starts in the winter semester.
- Additional admission requirements include a bachelor's degree or equivalent.
