Introduction to IMPACCT

The Improving Palliative, Aged and Chronic Care through Clinical Research and Translation (IMPACCT) research centre takes a transdisciplinary approach to improve the quality and equitable access to care for individuals affected by chronic conditions or those with palliative care needs.

Research Programs

The centre comprises:

  • Palliative, Aged and Chronic Care Research programs
    • Two national collaborative clinical trials groups:
      • Palliative Care Clinical Studies Collaborative (PaCCSC)
      • Cancer Symptom Trials (CST)
    • An international collaborative quality improvement program, the IMPACCT Rapid Program
    • The IMPACCT Trials Coordination Centre (ITCC)

Research Approach

All research starts from the perspective of the person living with a chronic disease or a life-limiting illness, considering the needs of and challenges faced by the individual, their carers, and families. The centre also considers the roles of health professionals, the health system, and society as a whole in their care.

Clinical Academics

Clinical academics work with individuals living with a range of chronic illnesses, including:

  • Cancer
  • Heart failure
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Vascular disease
  • Multimorbidity

Thematic Areas

Research areas include:

  • Symptom management
  • Interventions to improve function and independence
  • Optimising care transitions
  • Improving patient experience
  • Enhancing carer support
  • Improving models of care and approaches to ensure uptake of new knowledge into practice

Consumer Engagement

Meaningful engagement with the community contributes to setting priorities for research, ensuring the quality, relevance, and impact of the research. The centre partners with consumer advisors to seek input from the generation of ideas to the conduct of research, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination to impact policy and clinical practice.

Capacity Building

The centre values capacity building through leadership and collaboration, remaining closely connected to national and international clinical and industry colleagues.

Postgraduate Program

IMPACCT incorporates an interdisciplinary Postgraduate Program in Palliative Care, the first of its kind in New South Wales. The suite of online courses aims to directly meet the needs of industry, designed with input from an expert External Advisory Board and wide-ranging consultation.
