Master of Data Science and Innovation (MDSI)
The Master of Data Science and Innovation (MDSI) is a postgraduate degree that equips learners with tools to apply technical skills in real-world situations and transform practice in a field that is advancing quickly.
Program Details
- The MDSI degree offers students the option to undertake a data science internship, providing master's students with the opportunity to apply skills they've learned in the classroom to real challenges.
- The program is distinctive due to its transdisciplinary approach, integrating perspectives from diverse fields and placing importance on equipping learners with tools to not only apply technical skills but also to transform practice.
Internship Opportunities
- The NSW Government's Centre for Work Health and Safety is a valued partner that provides ongoing opportunities for UTS students to refine their skills, build their networks, and engage in practical learning.
- Through their academic studies program, the Centre onboarded nine UTS student interns, eight of whom were current MDSI students, organizing them into three transdisciplinary teams to work on a real-world challenge.
Real-World Application
- Internships are an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge in a real context, providing opportunities to build networks and test out different career possibilities.
- Students can self-evaluate their capabilities and place greater meaning on their skillsets through internships.
Communicating Complex Data
- Communicating complex data processes and insights to non-technical stakeholders without jargon is a challenging task that students must learn to overcome.
- As part of their internship, students are expected to communicate their work to diverse stakeholders across the organization, refining their communication skills and receiving feedback.
Codesigning the Internship Experience
- Reimagining a traditional internship through codesign promotes meaningful learning opportunities for both interns and the host organization.
- Providing an open-ended challenge allows students to explore possibilities, and regular meetings with supervisors offer guidance, feedback, and direction.
Peer Learning and Collaboration
- Working in a team of peers from diverse backgrounds creates opportunities for collaboration, skills development, and peer-to-peer networking.
- The development of 'soft' skills, such as providing and receiving constructive feedback, is a valuable takeaway from the internship experience.
Outcomes and Benefits
- The internship program is not only a channel to experiment with new ideas for the organization but also a way to give students an experience they can apply in their course and career development.
- Outputs from the internship include data tools that connect to social media platforms and present insights based on what people are saying and trends in current or emerging workplace hazards and risks.
