Introduction to the SWGS Major

The Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality (CSWGS) offers an undergraduate major in SWGS, which dates back to 1991. The major is housed in the School of Humanities but draws on courses from the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as other schools when they offer courses that fit the themes of the major.

Program Overview

The SWGS major provides students with the opportunity to explore the study of women, gender, and sexuality through a variety of courses and research opportunities. Majors have the option of completing a year-long senior thesis, and both majors and non-majors can participate in the Seminar and Practicum in Engaged Research.

The requirements for the SWGS major are outlined in the General Announcements (GA). Students may choose to construct their degree in accordance with the GA requirements at the time they matriculated or according to the most recent requirements.

Degree Completion

New majors must formally declare the degree program with the Registrar's Office. The GA requirements for the SWGS major may change during a student's time at Rice.
