BFA Programme in Wood Oriented Furniture Design

The BFA Programme in Wood Oriented Furniture Design is a three-year, 180-credit program offered by the HDK-Valand - Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg. The program is designed for those who wish to work with furniture from an exploratory and conceptual approach to materials, innovation, and sustainable development.

Programme Structure and Content

The program provides a foundation in materials, techniques, and design methodology, with a focus on wood as a material. The first year is foundational, with exercises that enhance skills in sketching, craftsmanship, and production. The second year emphasizes the relationship between the environment, contemporary society, and history, with training in developing products or furniture for specific environments and companies. The third year deepens in methodology, design, and communication, culminating in a degree project that allows students to investigate and carry out an exploratory design project in furniture design with a focus on wood.

Who Should Apply?

The program is suitable for those who question conventional furniture design and want to explore new tools and materials, investigate sustainability challenges, and meet social, economic, and industrial needs through collaborative project work.

Prerequisites and Selection

General entry requirements include an approved work sample, with exceptions made for Swedish language proficiency when the language of instruction is English. The selection process is based on an assessment of submitted work samples and a personal interview.

After Graduation

The program provides a foundation for working in a design office or running one's own business, as well as preparing students for further studies at the advanced level.

Facilities

The program is based at Campus Steneby, which features large, well-equipped workshops, including those for metalworking, furniture design, and textiles. The campus also has an art gallery and library.

Exchange Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to participate in exchange programs with other schools through the university's international network during their second year.

Tuition Fees

The full education cost is 996,000 SEK, with the first payment being 166,000 SEK. However, no fees are charged for EU and EEA citizens, Swedish residence permit holders, and exchange students.

Sustainability

The program meets the requirements for the University of Gothenburg's sustainability certification, with a focus on solving artistic and material-related problems while considering the environment and human needs.

Programme Coordinator

The program coordinator is Maria Sjöstrand, a senior lecturer at the HDK-Valand - Academy of Art and Design.

Study Counselling

Digital drop-in sessions are available on Mondays from 13:00 to 14:00 CET for students seeking study guidance.

Duration and Study Pace

The program runs for three years, with a study pace of 100% and classes held during the day. The program starts on August 31, 2026, and ends on June 3, 2029.

Application Period
