Journalist Program

The Journalist Program is a three-year undergraduate program offered by the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMG) at the University of Gothenburg. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in journalism, preparing them for a career in the field.


Program Description

The program focuses on practical training, with students producing a significant amount of journalistic content for various media outlets. The curriculum covers the fundamentals of journalism, including news gathering, writing, and editing, as well as more advanced topics such as investigative journalism and data journalism.


Program Structure

The program consists of six semesters, with the following courses:


  • First Year: Introduction to Journalism, Redaction, and Swedish Public Administration and Law
  • Second Year: Journalism Science, Advanced Journalism, and Research Methods
  • Third Year: Investigative Journalism, Data Journalism, and a 20-week internship at a media outlet

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:


  • Grundläggande behörighet (Basic Eligibility)
  • Historia 1b or 1a1 + 1a2 (History)
  • Samhällskunskap 1b or 1a1 + 1a2 (Social Science)

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on a combination of grades (66%) and the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (34%).

Graduates of the program have excellent job prospects, with approximately 90% finding employment as journalists within two years of graduation. Many go on to work in traditional media outlets, such as newspapers, radio, and television, while others pursue careers in digital media, communications, and public relations.
