The BFA Programme in Wood Oriented Furniture Design is a 180-credit program that aims to provide a foundational artistic education within design and prepare students for a professional career as furniture designers or for further academic education in the field of design.

Sustainability Labelling
The program is sustainability-focused, meaning that at least one of the outcomes clearly shows that the program content meets at least one of the University of Gothenburg's confirmed sustainability criteria.
Transitional Provisions
This program syllabus applies to students admitted to the program from the Autumn semester 2025. Students who have begun the program before the Autumn semester 2025 and have unfinished courses according to the older version of the program syllabus have the right to complete these through additional examinations.
Other Regulations
The language of instruction is English. Materials and certain workshop costs are covered by the student, but additional costs for travel, study visits, and shipping may apply.
Guaranteed Admission
A student who follows the program at the normal pace is guaranteed admission. The program applies a limited guaranteed admission to the elective program courses.
Program Structure
The program is structured over three years, with each year divided into two semesters. The courses are designed to progress from foundational studies to more advanced and specialized knowledge.
Year 1
- Semester 1: Introduction to design methodology, material studies, technology, artistic design, and theory and history in the field.
- Semester 2: Building on the introduction from the first semester, with a focus on practical application of knowledge.
Year 2
- Semester 3: Students take a common course on exhibition methodology and an elective course offered by the department.
- Semester 4: Students take a second elective course and continue to apply their knowledge and skills developed in previous semesters.
Year 3
- Semester 5: Students apply their skills in societal and professional contexts, with a focus on work experience and collaboration. Students choose between an internship or a course on design and craft in a sociocultural environment.
- Semester 6: Students complete an in-depth artistic degree project within Wood Oriented Furniture Design and present their degree project in a public context.

Exchange Studies
During semesters 3 and 4, the program welcomes incoming exchange students, subject to availability. In semester 4, students in the program have the opportunity to participate in exchange studies after applying to one of the department's partner universities.
