CHIR8512 Orthopaedic Physical Assessment
General Information
The unit convenor and teaching staff for this course is Benjamin Brown. This unit is worth 10 credit points and has a prerequisite of CHIR8511. The unit description is as follows: This unit introduces students to the common musculoskeletal conditions relevant to chiropractors in primary care settings. Students will be instructed on how to interpret clinical history, examination, and investigation findings, and how to plan and execute an orthopaedic physical examination for common musculoskeletal conditions.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Plan and undertake a clinical history and orthopaedic physical examination at the standard of a graduate-level chiropractor
- Apply acquired theoretical knowledge in order to tailor the clinical history taking and physical examination process to complex clinical scenarios
- Communicate and justify the clinical history taking, examination approach, and any proposed investigations to diverse audiences
- Formulate a differential diagnosis for complex clinical encounters using knowledge and clinical data acquired from the patient
General Assessment Information
To pass this unit, students must demonstrate sufficient evidence of achievement of the learning outcomes, meet any ungraded requirements, and achieve a final mark of 50 or better. The assessment tasks and their weightings are as follows:
- Invigilated Quiz: 25%
- OSCE I: 25%
- VIVA: 50%

- Weighting: 25% Students will be tested on theoretical knowledge of common musculoskeletal conditions, including assessment and examination findings.
OSCE I
- Assessment Type: Clinical performance evaluation
- Indicative Time on Task: 20 hours
- Due: 4/9/2025
- Weighting: 25% Students will be assessed on their competency in performing an orthopaedic physical assessment.
VIVA
- Assessment Type: Viva/oral examination
- Indicative Time on Task: 30 hours
- Due: 30/10/2025
- Weighting: 50% Students will select and justify assessment and physical examination for complex clinical scenarios, including formulation of differential diagnoses and communication to diverse audiences.

- Orthopedic Physical Assessment, 7th edition by David Magee & Robert Manske Active participation in the learning activities throughout the unit will require students to have access to a tablet, laptop, or similar device.
